HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER LEADS DELEGATION ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO NASSAU, BAHAMAS
(Grand Turk: August 28, 2006)….A delegation from the Turks & Caicos Islands, led by Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Galmo Williams,  recently returned to the islands following an official visit to the Bahamas.

The prime purpose of the visit was to meet with Bahamian officials to discuss matters of interest to both countries and to commence discussions on the formalization of a number of arrangements.

The visit from August 21-24 also included high level discussions with Bahamas’ Minister of Immigration Labour & Training Hon. Shane D. Gibson and other Government officials.

The discussions ranged from matters of national security, to improve and intensify both countries fight to combat illegal immigration, to training opportunities particularly for Immigration, Labour and Prison officers.

During their discussions with Hon. Gibson the delegation also met with the Bahamas Director of Immigration and the Acting Permanent Secretary within that Ministry.

The TCI delegation, which included Mr. Terry Smith, Permanent Secretary, Disaster and Prisons; Mr. Derek Been, Permanent Secretary, Home Affairs; Mr. Desmond Wilson Director of Immigration and Mr. Don-hue Gardiner, Advisor to Minister, also met with senior officials from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, namely the Acting Permanent Secretary, Prison Superintendent, and top ranking officials from the Bahamas Defense Force.

Meetings were held with the Acting Director of Labour and senior officials within that department.  The delegation also got a working tour of the Labour Department’s Service Centre.

The TCI delegation also used the opportunity to visit the Detention Centre and Prison facilities in Nassau, Bahamas.

An extensive session was held with the Director and staff of the Bahamas National Emergency Management Agency. This meeting afforded both countries an opportunity to share experiences and working solutions on a number of matters.
