A PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION WITH REGARDS TO THE RE-OPENING OF GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS
As a result the increasing tuition cost associated with paying for students to attend private schools on Providenciales, and delays in the replacement of hurricane-damaged classrooms at the H J Robinson High School in Grand Turk, the Ministry of Education is sorry to have to advise the general public that not all pupils will be able to return to public school, as scheduled, on Monday, August 31, 2009.

TCI public schools already have around 192 classrooms, plus specialty classrooms.  An additional thirty-four temporary classrooms are being sourced from a company in the United States to address space issues on Grand Turk and Providenciales.  These classrooms will be distributed as follows:
  • H J Robinson High             6
  • Clement Howell High        10
  • Ianthe Pratt Primary            8
  • Enid Capron Primary         6
  • Oseta Jolly Primary            4
The first shipment is scheduled to leave the manufacturer on September 14 and be installed by around the middle of October.  It is hoped that all 34 classrooms will be ready for pupils by third week in October.

Given that schools will be able to accommodate the majority of their school populations at the official start of the school year, only a few classes will be asked to remain at home until the classrooms are installed. Classes that are preparing for examinations, that is, Grades 5 and 6 at the primary school level and forms 4 and 5 at the high school level will not be affected.

Further announcements will be made via radio and television before the end of this week giving more precise details for parents and students.

The Ministry of Education sincerely regrets these delays and assures parents, pupils and the general public that everything possible will be done to have all children who meet registration requirement fully admitted within the shortest time possible.
