PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands; Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 - Director of Culture, David Bowen of the Cultural and Arts Commission in collaboration with Portia Clarke and the Edward C. Gartland Youth Center will be conducting a Cultural Camp from today, August 4 - August 28 2009.
The camp and activities will all take place at the Youth Center over a three-day a week - Tuesday and Thursday’s from 1-3pm and Saturdays 3-5pm- for three-week sessions that will culminate with a Cultural Explosion Show to take place on Saturday August 29th, 2009 at the Youth Center performance space. Director of Culture, David Bowen, will teach all classes.
Week one, August 4th, 6th and 8th - will begin with music and dance. Participants will focus on learning to play ripsaw music and perform TCI traditional folk dance and movements.
Week Two, August 11th, 13th, and 15th will focus on singing and learning Turks and Caicos folk songs; original poetry and spoken word dealing with local cultural themes will also be introduced.
In the third and final week, August 18th, 20th, and 22nd – youths will deal with Turks and Caicos studies and general knowledge focusing on TCI history, heritage and folk culture. Participants of the camp will also learn how to make traditional masquerade costumes that they will be able to showcase during the annual Boxing Day and New Years Masquerade and Junkanoo parades.
Rehearsal for the show will take place on August 25th and 27th, with all participants are expected to perform in the Cultural Explosion Show on Saturday, August 29th.
