| PRESS STATEMENT BY THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE ON REVAMPING TCI PUBLIC SECTOR |
GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Monday, August 17th, 2009 – “I am delighted to be TCI Government’s first Chief Executive. Having been in the Islands since early June, I know TCIG officials face big challenges as we seek to reverse the damage done to the public service over recent years.
But I am determined we should work quickly and energetically together to rebuild the integrity of the public service, to improve the quality of service to all those who live in the Islands, and to introduce durable systems to combat corruption and dishonesty. As the Governor said in his statement on Friday, “we must clean up public life”.
Drawing on my experience at the top of the UK civil service, my jobs is to establish those systems, set new standards and make the first crucial decisions over the next few weeks.
In October I will then hand over to my successor, Mark Capes, who is currently Deputy Governor of Bermuda. Mark knows the Turks and Caicos well, having served as Deputy Chief Secretary in Providenciales from 1991 – 94 and visited the Territory several times since then, most recently in September last year when he came at short notice, to assist with the impact of Hurricane Ike. Earlier, as Deputy Governor of Anguilla, Mark was head of the public service and introduced a number of major reforms.
We both very much look forward to our time here and to working with public servants at all levels, as well as with business, civil society groups and the wider public.”
