| TCI TO PREPARE FOR HURRICANE BILL |
GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Sunday, August 16th, 2009 – The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies is advising all residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands to start their preparations in earnest for the possible strike of Hurricane Bill, which is expected to be in the vicinity of the Turks and Caicos Islands by Friday, August 21st as a major hurricane.
In so doing, people are advised to ensure the following:
- Fix hurricane shutters or plywood sheets to upper floors of multi-story buildings.
- Ensure that shutters for ground floor windows and doors are within easy reach.
- Check that you have adequate supply of food, drinking water and prescription medication (three days).
- Have a fair amount of cash (as ATMs and Banks will be closed).
- Secure all-important documents.
- Clean and fill bathtubs and spare containers with water for hygienic purposes.
- Turn your refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings, opening only when absolutely necessary.
- Replenish your vehicle’s fuel supply.
- Move boats to safe harbour.
- Take down radio and satellite antennas.
- If you must be away from home, turnoff the main electricity switch and cut off the gas supply.
- Ensure that your property is secured.
The public is advised to monitor the storm and continue to listen to the radio for further updates.
