| SANDS FOR SAND BAGS FOR HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS |
PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands; Friday, July 31st, 2009 - In keeping with preparations for the 2009 Hurricane Season, the Red Cross TCI has been distributing sandbags across the islands of Providenciales, Grand Turk, South Caicos and Salt Cay, with Middle and North Caicos to follow in the next couple of weeks.
These bags, once filled with sand, play a vital role in flood prone areas as their easily stackable nature makes them ideal for flood prevention creating a solid, strong wall against flood waters. After usage, dry sandbags can be stored for future use. The locations below are where sand for these bags can be procured on each of the islands:
Grand Turk - through the DECR office located at Church Folly where persons will be able to get sand from the temporary sand pit located at South Base near the boat ramp.
Providenciales- through the DECR office located at Lower Bight Road, the National Environmental Centre, where persons will be able to get sand from the office yard.
South Caicos- through the DECR office located at Conch Ground where persons will be able to get sand from the quarry pit.
Salt Cay – through the District Commissioners office where persons will be able to get sand from the south east side of the island.
The general public is being reminded that removal of sand from any beach without the permission of the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) constitutes an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of US$25,000 or to a term of imprisonment for six months or to both such fine and imprisonment, and upon conviction on indictment to a fine of US$100,000 or to imprisonment for five years or to both such fine and imprisonment. Additionally, any vessel or machinery used in the commission of the offence is liable to forfeiture to the Crown by order of the Court.
For further information regarding accessing sand for sand bags please contact DECR offices at: 941-5122 (Providenciales); 946-2801 (Grand Turk); 946-3709 (South Caicos); 231-1358 (Salt Cay District Commissioner).
