PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands; Monday, July 20, 2009 – On Friday July 17th, 17 Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Officers received certificates of completion owing to a SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) Training Course at the Chalk Sound Police Station in Providenciales.
Three weeks ago, the seventeen graduates embarked on a crusade for knowledge; on this crusade -these officers pushed their hearts, minds and bodies to the limit. Today, these officers are now more capable to defend the people of the TCI in the fight against crime.
The Course was designed to enhance the operational capabilities of the Police Force’s Tactical Unit in various procedures and tactical maneuvers. To that end, a number of different subjects areas taught included: tactical communication, marksmanship fundamentals, and introduction to ballistic shields, introduction to close quarter battle, among other areas.
The SWAT Training Course was facilitated by a team of five (5) Officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force SWAT Team, and headed by Inspector Kenton Rolle.
Inspector Rolle explained: “As society develop and population, poverty and illegal migration increase, it later becomes necessary to establish formal systems to police countries and offer deterrents against increased criminology. Police departments throughout the world began to form tactical teams to deal with organized crime and persons who terrorize neighbourhoods with high powered weapons.”
H.E Governor Gordon Wetherell, who was in attendance to witness the graduation, said to the Officers: “ I hope that taking part in this training increases your confidence as you carry out your day to day work and also be able to act as role models whom others aspire to emulate. So how you use this training in your day to day activities is the ultimate test on how effective this training has helped you grow as an officer.”
“Finally, I give my thanks to Royal Bahamas Police Force and I am pleased to witness this latest example of the co-operation between the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Royal Turks and Caicos Police Force and long may that continue.”
