| GOVERNOR WETHERELL PRESS STATEMENT ON THE SUSPENSION OF THE TCI CONSTITUTION |
GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Monday, July 13th, 2009 – “I am today making a proclamation which brings into force The Turks and Caicos Islands Constitution (Interim Amendment) (Amendment) Order 2009. This enables me to bring into force different provisions of The Turks and Caicos Islands Constitution (Interim Amendment) Order 2009 made on 18 March 2009, which will suspend parts of the Constitution of the Turks and Caicos Islands, at different times.
I do not presently intend to make use of this new Order before the hearing in the English Court of Appeal next month of the application for permission to appeal by the former Premier against the dismissal of his claim for judicial review; and my objective and that of the British Government remains full implementation of the March Order. However, the new Order provides a useful element of flexibility, for use if required in the sequencing of the March Order's implementation.”
Gordon Wetherell
