RFA FORT GEORGE VISITS TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS
GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 - RFA FORT GEORGE’S visit to the Grand Turk and Providenciales islands from the 7-10th July is part of the United Kingdom’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief commitment to the region. During the visit to both islands the vessel will be working with the local police and other local authorities conducting disaster relief training. This training will improve the parties understanding of the necessary requirements to be implemented in a disaster along with the capabilities and resources of both shore and shipboard authorities.

The deployment of RFA FORT GEORGE to the Caribbean forms part of the UK’s commitment in providing support to UK Overseas Territories specifically with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief. In addition the vessel can be called upon to work closely with Counter Narcotic Agencies in the region supporting HMG in counter drugs policy. At the same time RFA FORT GEORGE provides a highly visible operational posture in support of regional Maritime Security.

A primary role of RFA FORT GEORGE is to supply Royal Navy, NATO and other allied ships whilst at sea, with fuel, food, stores and ammunition to remain operational whilst deployed. Dual-purpose replenishment rigs are fitted amidships, enabling transfer of fuel and stores to two ships simultaneously and there is a capability to fuel vessels by stern rig.

RFA FORT GEORGE also provides aviation support to the Royal Navy and is equipped with an extensive flight deck, with hangar capacity for three Sea King or Merlin helicopters including full maintenance facilities. The ship is capable of concurrent operations by Replenishment at Sea (RAS) and a Flying capability.  The ship has a compliment of 132 Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Royal Navy and Defence Equipment Support personnel. These personnel form specialist teams to go ashore and can provide support in Engineering, Medical, Fire Fighting and the ship’s small boat provides flexibility and access in a variety of scenarios.
