GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Monday, July 6th, 2009 - In the wake of a weakening economy, the Turks & Caicos Islands Government conducted an evaluation of services that were outsourced to private sector organizations. The objective of this exercise was to determine cost saving measures which could control and/or reduce expenditure. Through the current provision with private schools, costs have escalated annually to levels that are presently unsustainable. In this regard, the Ministry of Education found it necessary to inform private schools that they will not provide financial support for students to attend their institutions in the upcoming 2009/2010 school year.
The Ministry and Department of Education appreciate the opportunity we had to partner with the private schools concerned, in a relationship that was mutually beneficial. Parents will appreciate that this partnership assisted them by subsidizing the cost of their child’s education. This arrangement has, however, run its course.
Parents are advised to liaise with the administrators at their child’s school to secure a payment plan that works for themselves and the school, so as to allow the child to continue his/her education there.
The Ministry and Department of Education continues its support of private schools through their engagement in activities and programs that could potentially develop staff competencies and enhance the educational experience of our nation’s youth, as together we work towards improving standards in education here in the Turks & Caicos Islands.
