GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Thursday, May 14th, 2009 - Amidst the chatter that young people are not living up to their fullest potential, one young, vibrant and confident youth is proving to his country that all is not lost.
Darron Hillaire, who captured the title of Tourist Board’s Jr. Minister of Tourism 2008/9 during Tourism Awareness Week 2008, has gone on to do great things. Since winning the title, he has been hard at work in the tourism area, developing a tourism brochure for his beloved South Caicos island home, and actively participating in the Tourism Action Club of the Marjorie Basden High School there.
On Thursday, May 7th, Darron had the opportunity to travel to Grand Turk and address and meet the students of the H.J Robinson High School. “It is a pleasure for me to be here this morning and I am grateful to have such a privilege. As Jr. Minister of Tourism I have had the opportunity to travel to some of our other islands on tourism business, and I look forward to representing the country at the regional Caribbean Tourism Conference later this year,” said Hillaire.
The Junior Tourism Minister then encouraged the student body to commit themselves to excellence at all levels, “study hard, participate in extra-curricular activities, and be the best you can be,” he exclaimed.
Earlier this year, Mr. Hillaire was formally introduced to his school as the new Jr. Minister and advised that his entitlements and responsibilities included:
Nationwide presentation of Jr. Minister of Tourism to all Government High Schools; completion of one approved tourism related project during tenure; completion of four weeks paid summer employment with the Tourist Board; television appearance on TCI Today with Mr. Bill Clare; participation in the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Conference; and participation in Tourism Awareness Week activities 2009
His Principal, David Bowen, describes Mr. Hillaire as being a very astute and intuitive student who is noted for his eloquence. Mr. Hillaire maintains a good average and is admired by many of his peers.
