GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Monday, June 8th, 2009 – On Friday, June 5th - third through fifth form students at the Helena J. Robinson High School in the nation’s capital – Grand Turk, had the opportunity to learn what careers await them, should they decide to enter the public service.
The Office of Public Service Management (OPSM) in partnership with HJ High conducted the career planning exercise aimed at promoting careers in the public service under the theme: “Your Career Path: Get it Str8.”
Mrs. Cheryl-Ann Jones, Director of Training and Development said: “the idea of this approach was to create awareness among students of the wide spectrum of careers available within the sector and various ways that they can make a contribution to public life.” She stated that the main target were students in their third, fourth and fifth forms, who are either about to make CXC subject choices, or those who have already made those choices and need to be guided on possible careers within the subject areas.
Just about every sector of the public service participated through talk, paraphernalia handouts and booths that were set-up throughout the school compound. Police, Finance, Disaster Management, Civil Aviation, Planning, EMS, Environmental and Medical Health, Education, Fire and Rescue, along with Government Information Service all participated in what is to become an annual event, and held in partnership at the various government high schools throughout the TCI.
Mr. Reinwald Lewis, Principal at the school said the day went smoothly and that the teachers and students alike were thoroughly impressed by the presentations. “The students were quite excited, and saw themselves in their field of interest. We at HJ work very hard at preparing our students for the future, and with events such as this, it only helps to give them that added and needed push in the right direction.”
