OPPOSITION'S VOTE OF NO-CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT PUT ON BACKBURNER
GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 - The Opposition People's Democratic Movement (PDM) recently filed a motion of no-confidence against the governing Progressive National Party, which was scheduled to be read at yesterday's sitting of the House of Assembly in Grand Turk.

However, owing to Standing Orders, this was not debated because Hon. Clayton Greene, Speaker of the House of Assembly ruled that the motion was not filed within the time prescribed by said Orders.

The Opposition's motion, to name but a few, indicates that in light of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) experiencing a troubled economy, and the present government over the last five years has had access to over US$1.2 billion dollars and have increased taxes in many areas on the heads of TCI's residents; and whereas the government has increased the national debt extensively, and the government's practices and policies as it relates to the Land Policy saw the callous and frequent sales in large quantities of the country' lands, one of its greatest assets and a non renewable resource.

The motion also added that government has recently enunciated a freeze on scholarships, a freeze on hiring in the Civil Service and a freeze on medical treatment abroad, where only catastrophic cases will be referred. Moreover, the PDM are of the view that the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands are generally unhappy with the presence of only one scheduled airline service provider – that being Air Turks and Caicos; they, as of late bought out their rival, Sky King.

These were some of the motions that were tabled; however, the session adjourned without a specific date being set as to when this motion will be heard.
