PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands; Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - Scores of cricket players and fans converged at the Down Town Ball Park in Providenciales on Sunday October 26th, where they witness a well orchestrated season opener in the form of a six (6) over competition.
More than four (4) teams battled for the US$1000.00 cash prize, along with a championship trophy. The event, which began at about 10am, was watched by over 150 spectators, with the afternoon seeing that number growing to about 200; as people all over Providenciales came out to enjoy what was viewed a spectacular cricket show for the entire day.
Bad light, however, forced the two teams advancing to the finals, namely, the St. Lucian Hitters captained by Marcus Charmalagne and the Civil Servants All Stars captained by Uriel Gilbert, sharing the cash prize of US$1000.00 and alternate the holding of the trophy over a period of time. This decision was a result of insufficient time to complete the final game.
This event, the first of its kind, was dubbed the "Mega Force 6 Over Ball O 'Rama", and saw the cash prize being donated by Mega Force Electrical limited. Other sponsors included Club Sodax, Purilun's Trading, Pablo's Laundromat, TCI Coca Cola limited and Miniature Gulf Course.
The Provo Cricket Association (PCA) expresses profound thanks and gratitude to Mr. Alvin Parker, Director of the TCI Sports Commission, for answering a courtesy call as they seek to bring back some life to the communities through sports.
With this event off on such a high note, the Association is now seeking to get things in place to have the main competition started as early as possible.
